DCR Screen Not Working

Fix a fuel pump DCR (Dispenser Card Reader) screen that is blank, frozen, shows an error, or won’t accept payments.

Use this when one or more fuel pump DCR screens aren’t working.

A DCR screen shows an error (like E01 or See Cashier), is blank, frozen, or the keypad doesn’t respond. Fuel may still dispense with prepay.

This is usually a communication issue between the DCR and the Commander, or a configuration that needs to be re-sent.

Quick triage for DCR issues

If one DCR is affected, start with targeted steps for that DCR only.

If all DCRs failed at the same time, suspect shared communication, BRCM power, or the Secure Switch connection.

If the customer can still prepay inside and fuel dispenses, the pump may be fine and only the DCR path is down.

Symptoms

You may see one or more of the following:

  • One or more DCR screens show an error like E01 or See Cashier.

  • A DCR screen is blank or frozen.

  • The DCR keypad doesn’t respond to button presses.

  • Fuel can be prepaid and dispensed, but the DCR screen isn’t working.

Most likely cause: A communication issue between the DCR and the Commander, or configuration data needs to be re-sent to the DCR.

Before you start

  • Count how many DCRs are affected — one or two, or all of them.

  • Note the exact message on each affected DCR screen (e.g. E01, See Cashier, blank).

  • Check whether all DCRs failed at once, or only specific pumps.

  • If only one or two DCRs are affected, start with steps that only impact those DCRs. Don’t initialize all DCRs as a first step.

  • Before any initialization, make sure all fueling positions are clear of active transactions.

How to fix DCR screens

1

Try Refresh Configuration

Send a Refresh Configuration to the affected DCRs first.

This is the least disruptive option.

Use it when POP Discount, DCR Keypad, DCR Idle Screen, or Car Wash settings are not updating correctly.

Note

For other configuration changes, you’ll need all three steps:

Before Initializing the impacted DCRs which is Downloading to one or few DCRs, confirm:

  • The impacted pumps/fueling positions are Idle and

  • No Active transactions or customers on those impacted pumps.

This prevents Initialization errors and stuck fuel sales.

Refresh Configuration Initialize DCR Driver Download to DCRs.

2

Before Initializing the impacted DCRs which is Downloading to one or few DCRs, confirm:

  • The impacted pumps/fueling positions are Idle and

  • No Active transactions or customers on those impacted pumps.

This prevents Initialization errors and stuck fuel sales.

3

Download to the affected DCRs

Go to CSR FunctionsFuel Manager MenuDownload to DCRs.

Enter the affected DCR number.

Use 0 only if all DCRs are affected.

Watch the DCR screens to see if the message changes or the screen refreshes.

Note

If the screen message changes after the download, the DCR is communicating with the Commander.

If it doesn’t change at all, the DCR may not be communicating.

4

Before Initialize DCR Driver, confirm:

  • All pumps/fueling positions are Idle

  • No Active transactions or customers at the pumps.

This prevents Initialization errors and stuck fuel sales.

5

Initialize DCR Drivers

Open Config Client and run Initialize DCR Drivers.

After it completes, repeat Download to DCRs from the register.

6

Check DCR configuration

Verify DCR settings such as DCR Key Config and DCR Position Attribute.

Correct any wrong settings, then re-send the configuration to the affected DCR.

7

Before Downloading to All DCRs or Initializing All DCRs, confirm:

  • All pumps/fueling positions are Idle and

  • No Active transactions or customers at the pumps.

This prevents Initialization errors and stuck fuel sales.

8

Initialize all DCRs

If individual steps haven’t worked, initialize all DCRs.

9

Check the BRCM and cabling

Check that the BRCM has power.

Confirm it’s connected to Port 13 on the Secure Switch.

For OEMV sites, use the Forecourt diagnostic tool to check which DCRs are communicating.

Note

If the BRCM has no power, the site needs a Pump/Fuel technician.

If all DCRs failed at once, this step is especially important.

FAQ

What is Refresh Configuration?

It sends DCR settings again without doing a full restart.

Use it to push updated settings to the DCRs.

It is faster and less disruptive than a full initialization.

What does E01 mean on a DCR screen?

E01 is a communication error.

The DCR cannot communicate with the Commander.

Start troubleshooting with that specific DCR first.

What is the BRCM?

The BRCM is the communication box between the Commander and the DCRs.

It also links to the fuel dispensers.

If it has no power, the DCRs will not work.

Why can fuel still dispense if the DCR is down?

The dispenser can still work with prepay from inside.

This usually means the pump can still dispense fuel and pumps are working.

The DCR payment path is the part that is down.
